How Can You Help

Volunteer

North Helpline ALWAYS has a need for volunteers! Whether you can offer a few hours a month or consistent time every week, North Helpline can use you.

Food Bank Volunteers

Wednesday and Thursday

People are needed to sort donated food and assist with a food bank distribution ( food bank on Wednesday only).  Hours between 9:00 AM and 1:30 PM. Time of arrival and length of time up to volunteer.  Food arrives in boxes, bags, and crates.  It needs to be sorted by food type for easier distribution on Wednesday and Saturday.

Friday

People are needed to bag produce and fruit.  May also assist with bagging bulk items such as rice, dog food, potatoes, etc.  Bread and pastry must also be sorted. Hours between 8:00 AM and 2:30 PM.  A full truck arrives about 8:00 and another at noon. Food must be bagged, sorted and put away.  Time of arrival and length of time up to volunteer. Muscle is also needed to off-load the trucks.

Saturday

Two shifts of volunteers needed.  The first shift starts at 9:15 AM and ends at 11:45AM. The second shift begins at 11:45 AM and ends at 2:30 PM. May assist with handing out food, carrying food to cars, or restocking food being distributed.  Volunteers can also arrive at 8:00

Any Day Of The Week

Volunteers are needed to pick up food at grocery stores every day of the week.  This is a commitment of about one hour for every store that a volunteer picks up from.  You need to be able to lift 50#’s for stores other than a Starbucks outlet and you should have a large car, van or truck to carry the items you pick up.  If you pick up from a Starbuck store you will be asked to bag the pastries that you receive.

Emergency Services Volunteers

Volunteers are needed to work in Emergency Services three to four times a month.  This group of volunteers works on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday from 9:30 AM until they are through, approximately 2:00 PM. This service is performed by three people each day and is open to the public from 10:00 AM until 1:30 PM.  You will be assisting clients either in person or on the telephone when they are in need of services such as: money for evictions and utility shut offs, emergency food, hygiene items, baby cupboard distribution, referrals to other agencies and organizations and counseling as needed.
